Music at Swimbridge
Intent
At Swimbridge we want all pupils to share in a love of music and the creativity it brings. Lessons taught here are active and engaging and provide opportunities for all students to be musicians; playing, improvising and composing both vocally and with instruments.
The music curriculum develops listening skills and encourages children to review and appraise a wide range of musical genres, styles and traditions including those of great composers and musicians.
Visits from musicians inspire pupils and provides all learners with the opportunity to see music performed live at a professional standard.
The progression of skills and knowledge is taught creatively and enables all pupils to access the learning and build confidence in their own musical abilities.
Opportunities to perform to both small and large audiences builds confidence and resilience in pupils as well as providing a stage to celebrate individual and group achievements.
Pupils experience the power and emotion of singing in unison during weekly assemblies and at our church services in which musical achievements are shared and celebrated with the wider school community.
Implementation
Swimbridge Primary School uses Charanga to support the teaching of Music from Reception to Year 6. Charanga is an award winning programme that offers an integrated, practical and explorative approach to learning music. It allows children to fulfil the statutory National Curriculum requirements for Music in a fun, engaging and practical way. The units of work allow children to develop their knowledge of musical vocabulary and concepts using a repetition approach to learning. The children build on their skills to enable them to perform a final piece at the end of each unit. They participate in singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments, composition, improvisation and listening to live and recorded music.
Each year group completes a unit of work from the scheme every other term. Each unit of work focuses on the strands of musical learning which corresponds with the National Curriculum objectives for Music:
